Why should you brush your teeth?

Food remnants of carbohydrates and sugar will stick to our teeth within 12 hours if they are not removed by brushing. So we should be brushing our teeth every morning and night.

How should you groom your mouth?

You already know that you should brush your teeth regularly to remove the plaque that causes tooth decay and gum disease. Here is some tips on oral care. Firstly we advise you to acquire a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and a flexible neck so that you can clean plaque from hard to reach areas without damaging your teeth and gums.
The most common mistake in brushing teeth is to ‘pretend’. Filling your mouth with generous amount of toothpaste and stroking one or two teeth does not count. Imagine eating your food on a plate with dirt on it. You'd like to eat your food on a sparkling clean plate, wouldn't you? You can take the same care for your teeth. When brushing your teeth, you must really mean to remove most of the (if not all) sticky deposits. For that you need minutes rather than seconds.
Most of the dental plaque are collected where the teeth meets the gum. So you should be brushing gently in a circular motion outwards from the gums. This will sweep away the plaque. If you have an electric toothbrush, guide the moving brush head slowly from tooth to tooth following the contours of the tooth and the curve of the gums. Surfaces of teeth facing each other are other high plaque accumulation areas which are difficult to reach by a toothbrush. These areas are cleaned best with flossing or with water-jets.
You may find it boring brushing your teeth for couple of minutes every single day. Playing your favourite song and brushing until the end is one fun way. Or you can brush your teeth while watching tv rather than standing by the sink. Don’t forget to spit a few times during brushing.

Hands-on oral care training is given in our clinics in case you do it wrong.

Why do you need professional cleaning?

Initially dental plaques are soft but hardened with the accumulation of phosphate and calcium ions in saliva over time. This will result in in the development of calculus (also known as tartar). Soft dental plaques can be removed by brushing, while tartar cannot be removed. A tartar is a hardened plaque and is immersed with bacteria. Therefore, professional oral cleaning should be performed regularly.
The areas where the tartar is mostly formed are surfaces of the lower front teeth and lower molars facing the tongue and the surfaces of the upper molars facing the cheek. In addition, in between teeth facing each other is another area with much tartar formation.
If the saliva has greater amount of inorganic constituency, the tartar may accumulate more frequently. In some people tartar develops in 6 months, while in others takes longer periods of time. Your dentist who performs regular checks decides how often professional cleaning needs to be done.

What is professional dental cleaning involves?

Professional cleaning includes deep and comprehensive cleaning performed in the dental clinics. In our clinic we use a systematic approach in providing professional hygiene.

  • Firstly ultrasonic scaler which produces high speed vibration is used to crush calculus from the tooth surfaces.
  • Then stubborn tartars and special areas are removed with hand held instruments (periodontal scalers). In case of roots were exposed root planning were done to smooth the surfaces with curettes.
  • AirFlow polishing that uses a mixture of air, jet water and fine powder is used to blast away any stubborn plaque and stains on your teeth caused by coffee, tea, wine and smoking.
  • Finally polishing is done by special pastes which will enable the tooth surface slippery to discourage to new plaque to stick for some time.

There is no need to numb the teeth and gum for professional cleaning. Topical anesthesia may be used for those who have sensitive teeth.

Do my teeth get whiter after the professional cleaning?

As your teeth will rid of the all those nasty looking tartar and stains that discolor your teeth they will return their natural whiteness. Surely you will have sparkling teeth. However, if you desire a couple of shades lighter than your natural teeth colour ask for a bleaching procedure.
